Dispatches for The Master Switch Campaign
August the 1st, 2026 — Morning
The master bathroom, before the wall
Dearest friends,
Today I open a new front, and it lies not in some distant wood but within my own bedchamber. The master bathroom switch — once a loyal servant of this household — has turned traitor. It will summon the light, but it will not dismiss it. Such insubordination cannot stand.
The plan of battle is ambitious: a wholly new box shall be established to house the fan switches, a fresh garrison on new ground, while the old position is to be dug out and replaced with deeper fortifications. This is no mere skirmish. This is engineering.
The opening maneuver is complete. I have marched upon the armory and severed the enemy's supply lines — though I confess the campaign was not without collateral. In the course of my testing, fully half the household was plunged into darkness, and I ask that history record those brave rooms as necessary sacrifices, made in service of the greater cause.
The wires now lie dormant. The wall awaits. I go to open it up, and whatever I find within, I shall face it as a soldier.
Yours in darkness, by my own hand,
— Cpt. Tony
August the 1st, 2026 — Afternoon
Before the open wall, in conference with the wires
Dearest friends,
For hours now the household has sat in darkness, and for hours I have sat before the open wall, conducting what I can only describe as an interrogation. The wires, at long last, have confessed — and their testimony has shaken me.
I discovered a shared neutral running between two circuits entire. I discovered another, binding the fans to the shower light in an alliance no man sanctioned and no map recorded. Whoever wired this position before me fought by rules of his own devising, and I have spent the better part of a day deciphering his doctrine. I record it all faithfully, that no future soldier need suffer as I have suffered.
Nor was that the day's only reversal. My chosen ground for the new switch box proved already occupied — a toggle bolt, anchoring the shower's grab bar, entrenched precisely where I meant to dig. I was forced to withdraw and select new ground, and I do not mind telling you the wall bears the scars of my reconnaissance. The drywall shall demand its own campaign in due season. I have added it to the ledger of debts this house holds against me.
But friends — the plan is complete. Every wire is known, every neutral accounted for, every route drawn. The hour of reassembly is upon us. What was taken apart in confusion shall be put back in understanding.
Yours in hard-won intelligence,
— Cpt. Tony
August the 1st, 2026 — Evening
The new garrison, lower box
Dearest friends,
Seven hours. Seven hours this household has dwelt in darkness, and I write to you now with news worthy of the wait: the breakthrough has come.
The lower box — the new garrison — stands complete and wired. It resisted, of course. The position would not hold fast until I drove it into the stud itself, and even then the first screws proved unworthy of the task, stripping out like green recruits at first fire. This necessitated a resupply run to the depot, where I secured screws of proper caliber and, while the wagon was hitched, a store of large Wago connectors — fine modern instruments that have made honest work of the chaos within the box. It was but a single trip, and I count that discipline among the day's quieter victories.
The upper box, as if in apology for its brother's insolence, came together with hardly a fight. All is connected. All is tested. All is good.
There remains only the final maneuver, known to every veteran of these walls: the shoving of the wires. It is an inelegant business — no manual describes it honestly — but the wires must yield, the plates must seat, and the screws must turn. I go now to finish it.
Yours at the edge of victory,
— Cpt. Tony
August the 1st, 2026 — Night
The doorway, at last in light
Dearest friends,
Light has returned to the household.
Every switch answers its calling. Every fan obeys. The traitor that once refused to dismiss the light has been drummed out of service entirely, and its successors — tested, proven, and true — now stand their posts. After seven hours of darkness, of interrogated wires and stripped screws and unmapped neutrals, the campaign is won.
One matter remains upon the ledger: the wall itself, which bears honorable wounds from the day's maneuvers. Tonight I shall dress them roughly, as a field surgeon does, and tomorrow the finer work of restoration begins. But that is tomorrow's campaign, and tonight I will not let it dim the hour.
I confess, friends, as I stood in the doorway flicking the switch on and off like a man who had never before beheld electricity — it was, in its small way, beautiful. This house asked something of me today, and I answered.
What an adventure indeed.
Yours in light, at last,
— Cpt. Tony
